Previous reviews have hit the highlights, so these are my observations. This entire mountain was once bustling with gold mines. They said there was waste-deep snow above tree line and they were not able to summit. Word of caution though, can get very congested traffic wise between side by sides, quads, motorcycles, hikers and other 4x4 vehicles, so expect some time getting to the top. Starting off in St. Elmo was awesome. We took the "easier" route at Waypoint 8, avoiding the "Old Tincup" portion of the trail. Great as always! There is also fat biking here on groomed snow mobile trails. As you start down the other side of pass, the road is a bit rougher. The rocky trail will definitely put your gut in check but it is an absolutely breath taking ride. If both passes are still closed, we won't get much riding in. Everyone behaved but the big groups of UTVs really need to get radios to communicate to the front to pull over and let others pass once and a while. The route can be made more difficult if taking the old tincup route which has one large boulder section and is very narrow with overgrown brush. The snow was about 2 feet deep until we reached tree line. The area is large enough to accommodate many users without blocking the trail. Note the wildlife that may be in the vicinity, including marmots that live among the rocks. Great improvements to the trail on the Taylor Park side as you near the top. Snow is extremely deep and off camber before ever approaching the switchbacks. At times the road was more of a river, which on other trails would have been more difficult, but you still have decently wide trails. The shelf road is a 400 meter section on the St Elmo side which at its most narrow point still left me with 2 of space on either side. The views from Tincup pass are amazing and it is a fun trail that is closer to a 3 if you skip the Old Tincup route (there was someone stuck going uphill and we did not do the old route). The trail down to St. Elmo isn't quite as interesting as the Tincup side. Most of the trail is pretty easy but there are large rocks to watch out for. Great camping at the beginning of Tincup also. Either way, it's not just a skip and a jump. The trail was very wet and soggy at the start with a little bit of snow here and there on the trail till about 2 miles in. 96% of travelers recommend this experience. Very very scenic drive. As trail conditions change this helps us keep the community I am a huge supporter of Stay the Trail and Tread Lightly, and have participated and even been in charge of many trail restoration projects.
